I’ve been lucky to meet some good folks in my life. Last week, I met the inimitable Tsh Oxenreider at the Idea Camp in Austin, Texas. Over breakfast tacos (I’m already missing them), we talked about the writing life and how it works itself out on these internet spaces. Tsh is a gem of a lady with a true and authentic spirit and a clear and strong voice. So, when she asked me to share some poetry at her site, I jumped at the chance.
The piece is dedicated to my young friend Leo. A snippet of his story is below, but you can read the piece and accompanying poem in its entirety at Simple Mom.
Leo came both by water and by land,
crossed the border in a vessel, a cargo hold;
in the womb of an American daughter
was the best seed of a Mexican
Like a comet, he seared first an invisible
path through Nogales. Through labor,
he broke ozone, streaked blood,
blistered the barriers of sound
